    School Uniform

    Amherst Primary School expects all children to wear our official school uniform and to take pride in their appearance at all times.

    We ask that they come into school wearing suitable clothing, e.g. sensible school shoes suitable for playtime and trousers or skirts appropriate for activities in school. Trainers are not permitted, but may be worn for physical education lessons and other outdoor activities as and when appropriate.

    Our uniform is grey shorts / trousers / skirts with white polo necked shirts. Green jumpers, sweatshirts, cardigans and dresses are widely available. Pinafore dresses may be worn and in the summer term only, gingham dresses may be worn too.

    Local stockists include Fletchers Sports, Game Changers and details of these can be found online, below, or please ask at our school office for further details.

    Amherst is a 'Sun Safe' school and as such, during the summer term and until the October half-term holiday, all children are expected to wear a sunhat to school. Further details can be found in our Sun Safe policy.

    Physical Education

    All children are expected to wear their 'House' colour T-shirt for Physical Education (PE). When children start attending our school, parents are informed of which 'house' their child belongs to and can purchase the corresponding coloured T-shirt from any of the local suppliers.

    Our 'houses' are as follows:

    Bordeaux = Red T-Shirt Pembroke = Blue T-Shirt
    Havelet = Green T-Shirt Vazon = Yellow T-Shirt

    Children are expected to wear dark green shorts in the Summer and black or dark green tracksuit bottoms in the Winter.

    Black or green leggings are allowed, providing children also wear their PE shorts on top of these.

    As described above, all children require trainers to take part in P.E. lessons and other outdoor activities.

    Children can also wear a school jumper or fleece in the colder months.

    For Years 5 and 6, shin pads and long black sports socks are required when taking part in sports such as football, hockey and rugby.

    Swimming

    Children at Amherst usually swim during the summer term only. In order to take part in these lessons, children will need bathers, a swimming cap and a towel/wrap. Goggles may also be worn.

    Boys are expected to wear swimming trunks, not board shorts.

    Girls are expected to wear a one-piece swimsuit, not a bikini.

    Jewellery

    Jewellery should not be worn in school. However, regular watches (not smartwatches) and a single small stud earring are allowed. If you are thinking of getting your child’s ears pierced, we ask that you consider doing this at the start of the summer holidays, as they will not be allowed to swim with the earrings in as these – according to regulations – need to be removed prior to lessons, including P.E. sessions. Jewellery can cause accidents or injuries as well as get lost or damaged, so we would ask children not to wear it at school.

    In addition, money and valuables should not be brought into school unless necessary or for a particular visit, trip or for a particular reason such as a PTA event. When doing so, instructions and guidance will be provided on how to send this into school, according to the circumstances at the time.

    Haircuts / Dyed Hair

    Children should not attend school with dyed or coloured hair or hairstyles or cuts / shaved cuts that are inappropriate for school – for example, 'Mohican' style haircuts, or shaved in patterns, including eyebrows. These are unsuitable for school. Children with long hair should be tied back when in school.

    Nail varnish, acrylic nails and makeup are not permitted to be worn in school at any time.
