Amherst Primary School

Amherst was first opened in 1901 as a separate school for boys, girls and infants.  In 1940, it was closed and occupied by German forces, reopening again in 1945 as a co-educational Junior School and a separate Infant School.

In 1960, the infants moved to a new building next door, the one still occupied by our Infant Department today. The old Infant School was taken over by the Juniors which, at that time, had over 600 pupils on roll.

The buildings were updated, and a new hall built in 1972 when Vauvert opened as a Junior and Infant School, which took junior children from the south side of St. Peter Port.

The Amherst intake now comes from the north side of St. Peter Port. In September 2003, the Infant and Junior Schools amalgamated to become Amherst Primary School.

The Amherst School Crest was designed in 1989. It represents the keys of St Peter and an anchor for the port. This is the crest you will see on our stationery, uniform and other places around our school.

Everyone in Amherst Primary School works to ensure it is a caring, nurturing, special place where children can grow, learn, and flourish. Amherst children are always positively encouraged, challenged, and supported to be the best they can be!

Our vision is to nurture and develop the values, knowledge, skills and understanding our children need to flourish and make a positive difference in our Bailiwick community and the wider world.
