Rights Respecting Schools
Amherst Primary school always aims to be a place where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.
We are extremely pleased that our school has been awarded the top level of UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA), achieving Gold status.
UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation for working with children and young people about their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.
It is underpinned by four key principles, which are:
1. Non-discrimination
2. Commitment to the best interests of the child
3. The right to life, survival and development
4. Respect the views of the child
Amherst pupils learn about their rights by putting them into practice whilst in school.
Amherst always strives to create the best possible learning environment for our children. This achievement demonstrates that we are committed to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in our school.
